Utopia Texas: A Great Place to Visit
Anyplace named Utopia has got to be a great place to visit! Early settlers to the area first wanted to rename it Montana Texas instead of Waresville, but the name had already been taken and the weather dictated that Utopia was a good second choice. This is a rugged area known for its canyons, cool beautiful streams and a variety of trees, including Live Oak, Pecan and Cypress. Though the actual town of Utopia Texas is small, less than 300 in population many people love to visit the area each year.
Year Round Birding
Bird lovers flock to this area year round to enjoy diverse species of their fine feathered friends. You will enjoy world class birding regardless of the time of year! There are a few species that are particular to Texas including the Golden Cheeked Warbler, Vermilion Flycatcher and several varieties of kingfisher. Many of the prime areas for viewing are on private property and ranches, but thankfully there are guides aplenty to take you practically anywhere you want to go. You might just catch a glimpse of an albino hummingbird, Lucifer hummingbird or a purple Gallinule!
Lodging
You might think this rural area would not provide much in the way of lodging or vacation housing, however, thanks to the many natural resources in the area there are also a variety of cabins, B&B's and vacation homes to choose from. Places like the Sabinal River Lodge offers handy access to all the amenities and even a rope swing out of the Sabinal River for those evenings when a cool dip is appropriate! The owners of this small establishment are warm and inviting as is their accommodations, they live on site and will do everything they can to make your stay comfortable.
Camping and Outdoors
Utopia Texas is a frequent summertime hot spot with its proximity to the Sabinal River, Frio River, streams and various campgrounds / parks. Garner State Park is located just west of Utopia near the Frio River and offers campers tons of amenities. Covered shelters, camping spots, cabin rentals, running water and rest rooms.
At the Lost Maples Campground, you will find both modern and primitive camping accommodations. This park is located a bit closer to Utopia Texas than say Garner State Park and offers visitors spectacular scenery, grasslands and Sabinal River.
If you are looking for something a bit more private that includes canoeing, along the Frio River just west of Utopia Texas you will find Private Campgrounds. Resorts, private RV parks and kayaking opportunities. It is important to note that these are temporary campgrounds and you will definitely want to call ahead to ensure they are still accepting visitors.
Utopia Golf Course
Nestled in Sabinal Canyon is Utopia Golf of Texas Hill country. Play a lovely nine hole course while enjoying a part of history. This golf course has been immortalized in book and film, first in "Golf's Sacred Journey" and the movie "Seven Days in Utopia, starring Robert Duvall. There is a wonderful new clubhouse open overlooking the ninth hole where you can relax, snack, play a round of dominoes or enjoy the beautiful widescreen television. Members will also enjoy the private BBQ patio where friends can come together after a wonderful day of golf.
Events
If you are not so much into nature trails or even golf, you could still enjoy Utopia Texas. It seems like there is always something going on including Rocktoberfest, Bike Classic and even winter trout fishing in January. Bat flight watching, country dances, Indian dances and campfire storytelling are just a few of the fun activities you can enjoy around Utopia Texas. There is literally something for just about anybody, and let's not forget the shopping opportunities.
